Marble City Opera has hired Frank Murphy as its Managing Director. The announcement was made today by Kathryn Frady, Executive Artistic Director and CEO of Marble City Opera. Murphy has served on the organization’s board since September, 2020.
Murphy fills a role previously held by the late Brandon Gibson, who died in November, 2022. Gibson was a beloved figure in the Knoxville arts community. Marble City Opera is raising money for the Brandon Gibson Memorial Endowment to ensure the continued success and sustainability of the organization.
Murphy said, “My friend Brandon Gibson was the person who first introduced me to Marble City Opera. He regularly contacted me about opportunities to interview the artists on the radio and to come see them sing at Marble City Opera performances. While no one can truly replace Brandon, I will do my best to help grow an organization that was so very near and dear to him.”
Kathryn Frady said, “Not only does Frank have a love for the arts but he also brings a wealth of practical experience to the position. He will assist me with community outreach, fundraising, media relations, customer service and several other duties.”
Murphy has worked in radio and television as a host and producer. He will continue to appear on East Tennessee PBS as host and head writer of the high school quiz show Tennessee Scholars’ Bowl and as host and producer of the interview show Up Close.
Since 2013, Marble City Opera has been Knoxville's chamber opera company, bringing American chamber opera and innovative performances of traditional operas to new audiences. They will present the world premiere of The Doctor & the Devils by Jason Overall on June 6 and 8, 2024 at the Old City Performing Arts Center. Marble City Opera will present site-specific performances of Puccini’s il Tabarro on June 22 and 23, 2024.
